Biography
Susy Macqueen researches in the areas of language learning, language assessment and language use in professional, workplace, health and educational contexts. She has a particular interest in the social role and impact of language assessments and the role of language in assessments more generally. Susy’s current assessment-related projects investigate the uses of standardized tests for educational reform and the role of language tests in migration policy. Her current health-related research includes the use of automatic translation in doctor-patient interactions and the role of laughter in hospital interactions. Her doctoral research focused on feedback and formulaic sequences in second language writing. Susy's background in education includes teaching in primary and secondary schools in a variety of different contexts in Australia and abroad. Her publications include The emergence of patterns in second language writing (Peter Lang, 2012) for which she won the Christopher Brumfit Thesis Award 2010. Her book with Ute Knoch, Assessing English for Professional Purposes (Routledge, 2019), won the International Language Testing Association/SAGE Best Book Award 2020. Susy is Co-President of the Association for Language Testing and Assessment of Australia and New Zealand.
