Biography

Andrzej Zielinski works across painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking challenging mythologies of progress via technological innovation.  His work depicts electronic devices – phones, computers, shredders, fax machines, ATM's – and addresses the many contradictions embedded in our relationships to them, which are cutting-edge one moment and obsolete the next, at once personalised and mass-produced, precious and disposable.  His work utilises a range of different materials, from the latest innovations in acrylic paints and mediums to ‘deep time’ objects such as wood, metal, and stone. In this way his machine templates mix the logic of different media to the point of excessive collapse.   In 2002 he completed his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in 2004 his M.F.A. from Yale University.    His work has been exhibited in art centres around the world including: New York City, Los Angeles, Berlin, Tokyo, Dubai, and Sydney.  His work first gained attention after his work was included in GREATER NEW YORK 2005 at PS1/MoMA. The Nerman Museum of Contemporary art exhibited his work and published a Hardbound, 163 page monograph of the exhibition Open Sourced (October 2015 – April 2016 at Nerman MoCA) with essays by Barry Schwabsky (Nation art critic),Christine Mehring (Department Chair and Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago), Klaus Kertess (independent curator and writer) and Han Ong (novelist and playwright).   His work is in the collections of the Portland Art Museum, The Mattatuck Museum, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Canberra Museum and Art Gallery, and the National Gallery of Australia.
