Biography

Professor Desmond Yip is a Senior Staff Specialist in Medical Oncology at The Canberra Hospital, Professor at the ANU Medical School and Adjunct Professor at the University of Canberra. He is a full time practicing medical oncologist. His main clinical and research interests are in the area of gastrointestinal oncology and developmental therapeutics of cancer drugs. He also has subspecialty interests in renal cell carcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours. He is presently a member of the Cancer Institute NSW eviQ Medical Oncology Reference Committee, Executive Member of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia, Treasurer of the Private Cancer Physicians of Australia and former Chair of the Clinical Oncology Group of Australia Gastrointestinal Group. He is a member of the Australian Government Professional Services Review Panel. He an active member of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group serving as current Chair of the Grants Committee, member of study management committees and Study Chair of an international multicentre randomised collaborative trial in gastrointestinal stromal tumours. He has been involved in the publication of over 140 journal articles and invited book chapters. He has been involved with three iterations of a Cochrane Collaboration Systematic Review in pancreatic cancer and also served on the working party to update the Cancer Council Australia Clinical Guidelines on colorectal cancer. Professor Yip has worked in collaboration with the John James Foundation, Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)/ Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Pacific Islands Program and Doctors Assisting in South-Pacific Islands (DAISI) to help develop cancer services in the Solomon Islands through in-country multidisciplinary missions, mentoring, supply of equipment and facilitating staff training visits to Canberra. He is currently assisting in the coordination of assistance with a number of stakeholders in staff training for the commissioning of the Port Moresby General Hospital Cancer Centre in Papua New Guinea.  He is present Chair of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia Global Oncology Group and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Asia Pacific Regional Council.
