Dr Juan Felipe Torres Alvarez

Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering)
Research Fellow
College of Engineering & Computer Science

Research interests

Dr Torres' research interests are sustainable heat and fluid flow (encompassing fluid mechanics and heat & mass transfer) with recent emphasis on transport phenomena in materials and solar-driven systems for energy and environmental applications. His background mainly lies in Japan where he lived for 12 years and obtained his undergraduate and post-graduate education with a prestigious Japanese Government scholarship. Dr Torres held a distinguished Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship and was awarded two doctoral degrees from Tohoku University, Japan, and Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France (separate examinations with joint thesis). After holding a permanent Research Scientist position at Toshiba Corporation for 2.5 years, he decided to move to Australia and pursue an academic career. Dr Torres is the course convener of Aerodynamics (Aerospace Systems Engineering Major) and has lectured Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer (Renewable Energy Systems Major).

Dr Torres is a mechanical and aerospace engineer with research and development experience in the high-tech Japanese industry. Since 2016, he has been a Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU) School of Engineering where he has established new research streams including solar-driven desalination, hydrogen storage, and high-temperature sunlight absorbers, all as Chief Investigator. Dr Torres has been a key contributor in securing almost three million dollars of funding from various national and international competitive sources, as well as from the Australian and Japanese industries. He has authored 32 journal papers, including 14 as first author, and filed four patent applications, including two awarded US patents.
