Dr. Sergey Timonin has recently joined the ANU School of Demography as a research fellow. He is currently working with the Head of School, Professor Vladimir Canudas-Romo on assessing remaining life expectancy of people with disorders within the ARC Discovery Project Grant “Life Expectancy among Disease-Diagnosed”. Before moving to the ANU Sergey worked at the Higher School of Economics (University) in Moscow, Russia and was a guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany. 

Sergey holds a Master and a PhD degree in Geography from Moscow State University. His research is in the area of causes-of-death mortality analysis, spatial demography including small-area mortality estimations and environmental epidemiology i.e. the impact of climate change on mortality. His previous research contributes to provide methodology for assessing and understanding spatial patterns and inequalities in health at various geographical levels. Sergey has recently contributed in estimating the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on excess mortality and life expectancy losses in Eastern and Western European countries.
