Biography

Jan taught Linguistics and English language at Sydney University from 1977 to 1990. He then moved to Suva (Fiji) for seven years and taught Linguistics at the University of the South Pacific. Whilst there he completed a PhD at the University of Otago (Dunedin, NZ) on the dynamics of Fiji English. In 2001 he started teaching Linguistics at Macquarie University. He retired in 2015.

Researcher's projects

Jan's current reserach projects include:

* A number of projects on Australian toponymy and loanwords

   - the origin and meaning of three placenames Cogie, Cowal and Kangarooby/Kangaroobie

   - indigenous toponyms and loanwords in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji

   - the placenames bestowed by Major T.L. Mitchell during his three expeditions into the interior of eastern Australia

   - the placenames bestowed by John Oxley during his 1817 and 1818 expeditions into the interior of NSW

* Writing a book on toponymic theory

* Co-authoring a book on the Dutch exploration of the Pacific during the 17th and 18th centuries
