Biography

Gabriele Schmidt is an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Literature, Languages & Linguistics. She has a Master of Arts degree from the University of Bielefeld specialising in German as a Foreign Language and a PhD in Linguistics from the ANU. In her PhD thesis she investigated the motivation of Australian university students to learn German. Before joining the ANU in 1996 Gabriele was a lecturer at the University of Düsseldorf. Gabriele retired from ANU in 2017 but continues her research as an honorary staff member.

Awards and Distinctions

2015: Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (UK)

2009: The Vice-Chancellor's Award for Community Outreach (Team Award)

2003: The Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching

2003: Honorary award from the German Ambassador for supporting the German-speaking culture in Australia and the foundation of the Canberra German-speakers’ Network

Researcher's projects

I am currently working on a study that investigates the language learning motivation of international students in Australia.

2017: "The linguistic representation of transgender people in German newspapers". Result: First Class Honours (H1)
