Research interests

Paul's current research interests include:

  • Governance, strategy and risk, especially in the financial services, education and health sectors
  • How public value and social impact are defined, delivered, measured and reported
  • How regulated entities meet their obligations and social license for customers and the community.



Paul O’Connor is an experienced strategist, senior executive and non-executive director.

Paul is the founder and principal of Pono Partners, a commercial advisory firm providing insight and advice for excellence in governance, strategy formulation, corporate planning, performance reporting and risk management. This work helps clients be clear about their purpose, be deliberate in how they deliver value and be prepared for risk through inspired leadership and empowered teams.

Most recently, Paul helped establish the strategy and design sustainable business and financial models for the ANU Institute of Space, a recently established ANU Innovation Institute that creates opportunities for ANU innovators to supercharge the Australian space industry.

Paul has 10 years’ experience as a CEO of large, complex service delivery and regulatory entities. His commercial acumen was forged in the insurance and reinsurance industry, both in Australia and overseas. Paul was based in Washington DC for several years, then London and Singapore. His governance experience is extensive, having served on more than 20 boards and committees. Paul is an active non-executive director, including chairing the audit and risk committee for a regulated higher education provider.

Paul holds degrees of BA (Hons I) from the University of Adelaide; Bachelor of Law from QUT; Master of Law from the University of Sydney; and the CEO Certificate from the Singapore Institute of Management. He is currently finalising a masters degree in corporate governance from the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship within Swinburne University.

Paul is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors; a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia; a national Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration; and, a Certified Health Manager. He is an Australian Lawyer, admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia and in three state Supreme Courts.
