Peacekeeping, peacebuilding, statebuilding and modern occupation, the politics of religion and the international relations of the Middle East.
Biography
Vanessa Newby's current research focus is peacebuilding and peacekeeping in the Middle East. Vanessa has published on the normalisation of peace through everyday security practices, the role of time in successful peacebuilding and the use of technocracy and credibility to negotiate the politics of peacekeeping.
Vanessa has a Masters and PhD in International Relations from Griffith University in Australia. She is an Arabic speaker and has spent over three years conducting research in Lebanon and Syria. In 2013 she was a visiting researcher at the American University of Beirut.
Vanessa's undergraduate degree is in Psychology from the University of Westminster and she is trained in conducting quantitative and qualitative research methods for the social sciences.
Vanessa is currently writing up her book: Mission Impossible? Negotiating the Politics of Peacekeeping in the Middle East.
