Mr Gareth Nelmes

Teaching Fellow (RSC); PhD Student (Hicks Group)
College of Science

Areas of expertise

  • Main Group Metal Chemistry 030204
  • Organometallic Chemistry 039904

Research interests

  • Main group metal catalysis
  • Low oxidation state main group metal complexes (particularly groups 2 and 13)
  • Sterically demanding ligand design
  • Main group metal centered radicals

Gareth was born in Canberra as the middle child of triplets. His love of chemistry started early, stemming from his first life-long dream of becoming a wizard. After attending school in the ACT, he undertook his undergraduate studies at the ANU, where he attained honours in chemsitry under Dr. Jamie Hicks and Prof. Penny Brothers, with the former of whom he is now undertaking his PhD.

Always an active member of the chemistry community, Gareth has been a demonstrator for many years, teaching first and second year, outreach, and the bridging course. He has also been a part of many volounteer organisations, including treasuer of the ANU Chemistry Society.

When not in the lab, Gareth enjoys painting, reading, and cooking.

Researcher's projects

  • Development of monoanionic, ligands with sterically demanding substituted arenes for the stabilisation of highly reactive main group metal species
  • Synthesis and investigation of low oxidation state group 2 and 13 complexes
