Researcher's projects
Richard's most recent book, Making Open Government Work (Palgrave Macmillan 2014), continues his recent academic interest in issues of accountability and transparency. Written for public managers it combines academic analysis with a wide range of actual examples from both Anglo-American and continental European democracies. It pursues themes from his earlier book Holding Power to Account. Accountability in Modern Democracies (Palgrave Macmillan 2003), but with a greater emphsis on the concerns of managers. He has also recently published a chapter on accountability deficits in the Oxford Handbook of Public Accountability (Oxford University Press 2014).
His textbook on New Zealand politics, Politics in New Zealand (Auckland University Press) is in its third edition (2004) and still in press.
He writes a monthly column in The Canberra Times Public Sector Informant on issues of interest to Australian public servants.
He teaches courses on public sector ethics and public management in the Master of Public Policy and Master of Public Administration. He retired in 2008 and is now Professor Emeritus in the Crawford School.
