Biography

Nicolo holds a Bachelor and Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering from the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia).

Researcher's projects

  • Closed-loop drug infusion for control of intraoperative arterial pressure
  • Real-time identification of patient-specific pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in anaesthesia and intensive care settings (in collaboration with ACT Health)
  • Fluid-dynamic and mechanical modelling of cell damage and viability in direct cell injection applications (in collaboration with the ANU Lab for Advanced Biomaterials)
  • Big Data in Sleep Medicine (in collaboration with Canberra Sleep Clinic)
  • Our Health in Our Hands ANU Grand Challenge - Diabetes

  • Empirical modelling of the effects of microgravity on pulmonary ventilation and perfusion [systems physiology, in collaboration with the Space Medicine initiative of the ANU College of Health and Medicine]

  • Development of an explanatory model for the pathophysiology of of obstructive sleep apnea [biomechanics, systems and control, systems physiology]

Current student projects

  • A portable solution for field testing of the performance of polysmnography amplifiers (ongoing ENGN Capstone project) (in collaboration with Canberra Sleep Clinic)
  • In-silico comparison of knematics in total knee replacements for mechanically vs kinematically aligned implants (ongoing) (in collaboration with the Canberra Hospital Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Group)
  • A variable magnetic field generator device for bone cell proliferation experiments (ongoing ENGN Capstone project) (in collaboration with John Curtin School of Medical Research)
  • Virtualisation of a FPGA development board for e-learning application (ongoing)
  • Use of bayesian inference for patient-specific prediction of the time course of propofol anaesthesia (ongoing) (in collaboration with ACT health)

Past student projects

  • Technical validation of a novel methodology to conduct anterior rhinomanometry tests in CPAP therapy candidates (in collaboration with Canberra Sleep Clinic)
