Biography

Michael Finch joined the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre in 2018, working both within the Centre and as part of ANU's military studies program at the Australian Command and Staff College.

He obtained a D.Phil in Modern History from the University of Oxford in 2010 for his thesis on French colonial warfare in the late-19th century, which was subsequently published in revised form with Oxford University Press.

In 2011 he was appointed Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of War at the University of Oxford and was made a Research Associate with the Oxford University Changing Character of War Programme.

In 2013 he joined King's College London as a Lecturer in Defence Studies and was promoted Senior Lecturer in 2018, working at the Joint Services Command and Staff College within the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. In this capacity he taught on the Advanced Command and Staff Course, as well as across the Intermediate Command and Staff Courses for Land, Air and Maritime, and was the director of the MA in Defence and Security Studies (Maritime).

Mike is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and has also taught at the University of Birmingham, the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Ewha Woman's University in Seoul, South Korea.
