Biography

Professor Kirsty Douglas is a GP clinical academic who is passionate about the value of general practice and primary care in a sustainable, equitable and high-quality health care system She is committed to training the next generation of health care workforce with a understanding of patient centred care.

Prof Douglas holds several concurrent roles combining policy work, primary health care health services research, medical education, and clinical work in general practice.  She is Professor and head of department of General Practice at the ANU.  She is Director of ACT Health Directorates Academic Unit of General Practice which involves policy advice in primary care and managing several ACTHD programs.

Prof Douglas’s research has been on policy relevant primary health care topics including medical workforce, models of afterhours primary care, the role of GPs in natural disasters and improvement of a CVR screening in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. She has worked closely at implementation of research evidence with the Commonwealth and ACT Health Departments.

Within the ANU Prof Douglas has held teaching, research, and management roles over the last 18 years including time as Deputy director of the ANU Medical School and Acting Director of the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute. Her teaching encompasses public health, evidence based medicine, communication skills and general practice.  Her clinical work is currently at Interchange Health Cooperative serving disadvantaged urban population focussing on drug addiction and complex mental health. Her clinical career has included private suburban general practice, an ACCHO, and rural and remote locums
